Every club ride has the same three problems. Someone's off the back and nobody's sure how far. Someone's partner is at home wondering whether "back by one" meant anything. And once in a while, rarely, but it's the possibility every ride leader carries, someone comes off on a descent and the group is four kilometres up the road before anyone notices.
One shared map fixes all three. Here's how to set it up for your club, once, in about fifteen minutes.
The setup.
- One person creates the ride in Aster and shares the join link or QR code to the club group chat. That's the whole admin.
- Riders join with a tap and their phone does the rest. No head unit needed, no fiddling at the café stop, and tracking runs in the background even if the app is closed.
- The watch link goes to whoever wants it. Partners, parents, the members who couldn't make it out. Watching needs no app and no account, it's just a page.
Set the ride to unlisted and only people with the link can see it. Your Sunday loop is shared with the people you chose rather than broadcast to the world.
What changes on the road.
The ride leader stops doing arithmetic. A glance at the map shows the whole group, who's in the front bunch, who's two minutes back, whether the regroup at the top has actually collected everyone. No more rolling out of the layby while someone is still fixing a puncture out of sight.
And if a rider stops and stays stopped, the map shows it to everyone immediately. There's an Alert button in the app for the worst days, and it sends the ride's contacts an exact location. It sits alongside whatever your club already does rather than replacing any of it, and exact location, instantly is a very good thing to have on a lane with no signal bars showing and no street names.
What changes at home.
The people who love your riders stop waiting. A kitchen-table glance answers the only question they actually have, are they moving?, and the finish stops being a guess. The Sunday lunch argument about lateness needs no arbitration, because the map has already said everything.
What it costs.
The club itself pays nothing. There are no club plans and no seats to buy. A small club is free, the free tier covers a club of up to three members, and members of an open club join with their own Aster Plus, £2.99 a month or £24.99 a year, one membership that covers every club they ride with. Watching is free for everyone, always.
