A Just Ride is personal tracking outside any event — a training ride, a run, a solo adventure. There's no registration, no organiser and no leaderboard. Just you, your route, and anyone you choose to share it with. Recording a Just Ride is free, always.
Start a Just Ride
- Open the Go Live tab. You'll see a big GO · Ride (or GO · Run)
button, with three compact chips under it:
- activity type — a Ride / Run toggle,
- who can watch — defaults to Just me,
- battery mode — defaults to Standard.
- Set the chips how you like them, then tap GO to start.
- Let the short GPS warm-up finish so your first position is accurate — you're away once the fix looks good.
- You're tracking. The screen shows your live map, your trail, and your stats — distance, elapsed time and current speed.
Like events, a Just Ride starts fully offline — no signal required. Your positions are stored on the phone and upload when you reconnect. See What happens when I lose signal?.
Share your ride live
Sharing is the who-can-watch control — Who can watch you live. Choose an audience:
- Just me — nobody else can watch. This is the default, and choosing it again stops any sharing you'd turned on.
- Followers & club — the people who follow you and your club can watch.
- Anyone with link — anyone you hand the link to can watch.
Choosing Followers & club or Anyone with link creates one live watch link. Share it through your phone's native share sheet or Copy it. Whoever opens it sees your live position, trail, distance and time — no account, no app, no login. There's no limit on how many people can watch, and you don't need a separate button to switch sharing off — just choose Just me again.
You can set this before you start with the who can watch chip, and change it mid-ride from the Who can watch pill on the ride screen. A Share / Invite button copies or sends the link.
If you turn sharing on while offline, watchers can follow along as soon as you're back in signal — the app tells you so.
Watching versus following. Anyone can watch your ride from the link with no account. To follow it — so they get a notification if you raise an Alert or when you finish — a watcher signs in with an Aster account first.
Pause and resume
A Just Ride pauses and resumes just like an event — your clock and distance hold while you're stopped. See Pausing and resuming.
Safety on a Just Ride
A Just Ride carries these safety tools:
- Tap I'm OK to reassure anyone watching if you've been stationary a while — they see a "Checked in OK · HH:MM" chip. Sending it needs signal; the app tells you if it couldn't go, and it never auto-retries.
- An Alert button that raises an alert to the people watching your ride, with your location. You confirm first, then have a short cancellable countdown before it actually sends — a stray pocket-tap doesn't fire an alert.
- Automatic crash detection. If your speed drops from fast to a dead stop, the app starts the same cancellable countdown and, if you don't cancel, raises a crash Alert to your watchers. Crash detection also runs during events — see Starting and tracking a ride.
Both alert the people watching you — they do not contact the emergency services, and if nobody's watching, the app tells you plainly. Neither ever ends your ride. See Alert and crash detection for exactly who gets alerted and what to do.
End and save
To finish, use the slide-to-end control on the ride screen — slide to end ride (or slide to end run, if you're running). Your ride saves to your history with its distance, time, average speed and trail, and you get a link to view it. It ends only when you slide to end — the app never ends a Just Ride on its own.
If you end while offline, the app records the exact stop moment and uploads the ride when signal returns — your trail ends where you actually stopped, not where you reconnected.
