Pausing and resuming

How pausing works, what watchers see, and why a paused rider is still on their ride.

Updated 28 August 2026

Pause when you stop mid-ride or mid-run — a mechanical, a café stop, a nature break — so the break doesn't count against your moving time. Works the same on a Just Ride or an event.

How it works

  • Tap Pause. Your clock and distance hold where they are, and your live location freezes in place.
  • Tap Resume to carry on. Your time and distance pick up from where they left off.
  • Your moving time is the total elapsed time minus however long you were paused.

Your status card turns amber and reads PAUSED, so a pause is never mistaken for a lost signal.

What others see

  • You stay in your ride while paused. Pausing is not stopping, finishing or abandoning — you keep your place on the leaderboard and your session stays alive.
  • Watchers see you as paused rather than moving, not as a lost signal. On a Just Ride, they also see a "Paused since…" time.
  • While you're paused, the app won't raise "off-route" or other movement-based alerts about you — it knows you've deliberately stopped.
  • Your safety tools still work while paused. Alert and, on a Just Ride, crash detection are unaffected — see Alert and crash detection.

The app never un-pauses or stops your ride for you

A pause lasts until you tap Resume. The app will not decide your ride is over because you've been still for a while — fixing a puncture, waiting out a storm, or sitting roadside with an injured mate is still your ride. Only you can end it. See Finishing a ride.

Good to know

  • Pausing is about timing, not safety. If you've had an accident, use Alert rather than (or as well as) pausing.
  • In a mass-start race, the race clock is the official measure: pausing affects your moving time, but the event's own clock keeps running.
  • If the organiser set a cut-off time, being paused won't get you closed out at the cut-off — the app leaves paused athletes alone. See Finishing a ride.
