Aster notifies you about the athletes, teams and events you follow, and about activity on your own account. You choose which of these you receive, see Preferences and quiet hours.
Notifications are nudges, not commands. Nothing you receive, and nothing in the tray, can start or stop someone's activity. That's always the athlete's decision.
Watching an athlete or a race
These go to the people following an athlete or event: spectators, teammates and fans.
- Race progress: an athlete you follow signs up for or starts a race, and as they go: lap splits and distance milestones (for example passing a round distance or reaching a checkpoint on a point-to-point route). Distances in these read in your own unit preference (metric or imperial), not the athlete's, see Privacy and your data.
- Race finishes and cutoffs: an athlete you're watching crosses the line, hits the organiser's cutoff time, or doesn't finish.
- Stoppages and off-route: a tracked athlete hasn't moved for a while, or has strayed from the course.
- Feed-zone approaches: during a race, a countdown as an athlete you're watching nears a feed station.
- Gone quiet: when you're watching someone's Just Ride, an alert if their tracking hasn't updated for a while, so you know before you start worrying.
Good to know: ride or run, these updates only ever describe what an athlete is doing. A "stopped" alert means "still out there, not moving": someone fixing a puncture or waiting out a shower is still on their activity. It never means the ride or run has ended.
Sportives and other unranked formats show times, not positions. For a sportive gran fondo, a point-to-point or a meet-up, there are no rankings, so nothing you receive ever talks about positions or places. Progress updates stick to distance, milestones and checkpoints, which suit every format. See event types.
Events you follow
- Event reminders and announcements: the countdown to a race you've registered for, and posts from the organiser of an event you ride, run or follow.
- New events from organisers you follow: someone whose events you follow has published a new one.
- An event you starred is live: an event you starred has just started, so you can tap straight in to watch.
Clubs
These go to members of a club you belong to.
- Board posts: someone posts to a club board you belong to.
- New rides or runs: your club schedules a new ride or run, or a clubmate invites you to one.
- Ride or run reminders: a reminder before a club session you're going to, including when the group sets off and if the route changes.
- Ride or run chat: messages in the chat for a ride or run you're going to.
Your own account
These go to you, about your own posts, follows and messages.
- New follower: someone followed you.
- Likes on your posts: someone liked a post or story of yours.
- Comments on your posts: someone commented on your post or story, or replied to your comment.
- Mentions: someone @mentioned you in a post, story or comment.
- Messages from an organiser: an organiser sent you a message during a safety alert, or broadcast an announcement to everyone in an event you're riding or running.
Good to know: Aster doesn't have a general inbox or direct messaging between athletes. "Messages" here means organiser-to-athlete messages: an announcement to a whole event, or the two-way chat that opens during an Alert.
Teams
- Team updates: your request to join a team was received, approved or declined, or you were made the owner of a team.
Safety
- Safety alerts: an athlete you're watching has raised an Alert (or crash detection raised one for them). These always come through, even during quiet hours. An Alert notifies the people watching that ride, it does not contact the emergency services. See Alert and crash detection.
Where notifications appear
- As push notifications on your phone (see Push notifications and devices).
- In your in-app alerts list (the bell), which records everything even when push is off, so you never silently miss something.
Choose which types reach you in Preferences and quiet hours.
