Aster only knows where you are when you choose to share it. This page says what's held about you and why, and points you to the controls.
What's held about you
- Account basics. Your email and the profile details you add: name, photo, banner, bio, location, social links. At sign-up you also give your date of birth and, optionally, your gender; these place you in the right age and gender categories for results.
- Display preferences. Your unit choice (metric or imperial) and sport preference (ride, run, or both) are saved to your account, so notification copy and default views match your choice on every device, not just the one where you set it. See Display and units.
- Location, only during an activity you start. When you tap Start, the app records GPS points for that ride or run. Nothing is recorded before you start or after you stop.
- Activities and events. The events you register for, your routes, distances, times, and any posts or comments you publish.
- Follows and devices. Who you follow, your notifications, and the devices registered to receive push alerts.
- The minimum technical data needed to keep the service running. Aster doesn't sell your data or build advertising profiles from it.
How visibility works
- Watching public and unlisted events needs no account, so spectators aren't asked for data they don't need.
- Your email and password are never shown publicly.
- Just Rides are private by default: visible only to you and anyone you give a watch link.
- GPS points outside a ride's start-finish window are never stored or shown to anyone.
When you join an event or start a shared ride where your live position will be public, Aster records that you understood and agreed to it, a one-off acknowledgement at that moment, not a setting you have to hunt for.
For the full picture of who sees your position and when, see Who can see your location?.
You stay signed in
Aster never signs you out because of a network or server error, not mid-ride, not in a dead zone. The only things that end your session are signing out yourself, or the app detecting its saved login is corrupted on your device. If your login needs refreshing, a small banner asks you to sign in again; your ride and data stay safe on the device in the meantime. See Account and signing in.
You're in control
- Edit or remove your public details any time, see Your profile and handle.
- Choose what you're notified about, see Preferences and quiet hours.
- Manage optional marketing emails, export everything you've stored, or delete your account entirely, all under Settings → Privacy & data. See Export or delete your data.
Good to know
- Raising an Alert shares your location with the people watching your ride so they can help. It doesn't contact the emergency services. See Alert and crash detection.
